Is it safe to go to the grocery store right now?  Given that we’re in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, that’s a question we’re probably all asking ourselves.  But even though grocery shopping has become increasingly difficult – especially with the social distancing concept being stressed – there are ways to stock up on food and supplies while minimizing your risk to being exposed to the virus.

  • If you’re over the age of 60 or have a compromised immune system, think about getting your groceries delivered. If that is not an option, try to hit the stores early in the morning or late at night when there is a likelihood of less shoppers around.  Some stores in the U.S. and abroad have even introduced senior-only hours in order to accommodate those who are most at risk.
  • When shopping, try to wipe down the shopping cart with cleaning wipes or hand sanitizer. Or simply bring your own hand-sanitizing wipes to ensure your cart, as well as your hands, are sanitized.
  • Even though grocery stores are hard-wired at sanitation and hygiene, you still want to limit your time in such a public place. In order to do this, make a shopping list of what you need in advance and stay focused while you’re in the store.
  • Don’t avoid non-perishables. After all, fruits and vegetables provide a wealth of nutrients that support health, as well as a strong immune system.  For more on which fruits and vegetables last the longest, read this recent post.
  • Don’t make your shopping trip a family affair. Basically, you need to get in and get out, so the less people with you, the better.
  • Be mindful and don’t hoard supplies – only take what you need. This will not only prevent some of your food from getting wasted or expiring, but it will also help ensure others have access to the essentials, such as soap and toilet paper.
  • When you get home, don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly, as well as any produce you may have picked up. In addition, if you used reusable bags at the store, make sure to wipe them down thoroughly or wash them immediately.
