For the happiest holidays, it's important to stay sharp and get ahead of the game! Chef Jodi has some tips that will keep you sharp in the kitchen (really!) and how to keep things Garden-fresh and sustainable all year round.
You don't necessarily have to have a backyard garden like we do at Lajollacooks4u to keep things Garden Fresh! We encourage everyone to break the super market chain and explore local Farmer's Markets for produce and ingredients. Not only are you sure to get fresh and sustainable ingredients, you're also supporting small businesses and local families during the holidays!
Another way to stay Garden Fresh without a garden is to grow your own simple, potted ingredients, such as scallions. If you have extra scallions from a big cooking spree, simply cut off the green tip, place in a bowl full of water, and watch as they sprout again! A simple, sustainable act like this saves time, money, and is a pretty fun experiment. Try it!
The most important tools in the kitchen are your hands. Second runner-up? Knives. The last thing you need during a massive holiday cooking session is blunt knives. Stay sharp by keeping your knives sharp and hone them every time you cook.
How? Simple: run the knife at a slant from bottom to top on the honer. A few times through and you'll have a nice, sharp knife. Cooking will be that much more efficient.
Prepare in advance! Purchase and gather your ingredients ahead of time. Prep a day or two in advance and store. Planning and preparing ahead will ensure that your holiday cooking sprees are fun, smooth, and well-organized.
From gifts, to family gatherings, and long cooking sessions, holidays can seem rather hectic. Remember: holidays only come once a year. Enjoy them! The greatest gift in life is simply spending time with loved ones. We wish everyone the happiest of holidays!
