Summer is around the corner, and there’s no better way to enjoy warm summer evenings than out by the grill with your family and friends! Here’s what you need to know to become the grill-master of your neighborhood:
Get a Clean Start
Prior to heating up the grill, use a long-handled wire brush to scrub the hot grate. This keeps it clean – which ensures your food will taste its best!
Heat in Advance
Preheat your grill 15 to 25 minutes before you start cooking to make sure it reaches the right temperature. This not only prevents food from sticking, but it kills bacteria, too!
Add Smoke
Whether you grill over gas or charcoal, the kind of wood you use can add a specific flavor. Try apple for sweetness or mesquite for a tang. Cherry and oak are also good options, too.
Shut the Lid
Remember to keep the lid closed as much as possible! This not only allows food to be cooked faster, but it traps the smokiness that enhances the flavor.
Don’t Flip!
By limiting the amount you flip meat, the lid doesn’t have to be opened as much – which results in quicker cooking.
Time It
Food continues to cook after it comes off the grill, so it’s best to remove it just before your desired “done-ness.” Have an instant-read thermometer nearby to check its internal temperature!
Take a Break
Before serving, let finished meats rest on a clean platter for about 10 minutes before carving. This allows juices to redistribute evenly – the key to perfectly cooked meat!
Happy Grilling!
